Hi Courtney,
It’s a little hard to know exactly what you are asking. If I understand you correctly, then I think you have observed how many religions there are, and how many people follow them, and how devoted people are, and you are wondering why that is.
It is certainly the case that by a vast majority most people in the world are religious. They have been throughout history as well. Atheism is not something new, but until very recently there have not been whole societies that did not acknowledge some kind of God.
There is only really one feasible explanation for this. God really is there, and wants us to know that he is there, and he has put into us a desire to know him. Of course everyone worships different god(s), so its obvious that figuring out what God is really like and what he wants from us isn’t easy. In fact, it seems apparent that if we are going to figure out who God is or what he is like at all then he is going to have to tell us.
The Bible tells us exactly these things. Everyone knows that there is a god and that God wants them to know him:
“...what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them.” (Romans 1:19)
But people ignore what God has told them and instead invent gods of their own to worship:
“Although they knew God they did not honour him or give thanks to him… and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling men and birds and animals and reptiles.” (Romans 1:23)
But everything is not hopeless. Jesus came to show us who God really is and what he is like:
“No-one has ever seen God, the only God (Jesus) who is at the Father’s side has made him known.” (John 1:18)
Even though people have an incredible inclination to wander off and invent their own gods, they all know that God is there and they all know that he wants them to respond to him. Now that Jesus has come we know what God is like, and we know that the proper way to respond to him is with faith. If we trust in Jesus’ death and resurrection then we can enter into the relationship with God that everyone has always wanted. It just depends whether we will believe what God has told us about himself, and trust Jesus Christ, the person that he sent to tell us.
I don’t know what you think or believe about God but let me encourage you to find out more. If God is really there then it would be important for you to know as much about him as you can. So why don’t you start by looking at
http://www.christianity.net.au/god/
which gives you an overview of what the bible says about God. Even better would be to get hold of a bible yourself and read Mark’s gospel.
It also helps to talk to others who know about God. And of course you are also very welcome to stop by the website and browse the answers available. There are many people like yourself who have a suspicion that there is something out there so let me encourage you to investigate further.
