Dear Wendy

We can be sure of eternal life because Jesus finished the job of defeating sin and death when he died on the Cross and rose again. That is why he said “it is finished” as he died (John 19:30). That is also why it says that Jesus sat down at God’s right hand after making purification for sins (Hebrews 1:3 and 10:12-14). Jesus is the propitiation (atoning sacrifice) for the sins of the whole world (1 John 2:2). Jesus has done everything!

This means that all anyone has to do to have eternal life is look to Jesus in faith. Everyone who calls on his name will be saved (Romans 10:13). That everyone includes you!!

Problems come when we start to look inside ourselves and ask, “Do I really have faith?” or “Am I really calling on Jesus’ name?” There is no need to ask these questions. Just continue living out your faith by prayer, meeting with God’s people at church, and loving others. The key is to look outside yourself, to Jesus and his people.

I have prayed that this will help you to know that it is possible to be sure of having eternal life.
